Re: COVID-19 Response
First of all, thank you to healthcare professionals, first responders, and workers in the service industry who have maintained vital functions throughout this extraordinary time in the life of our community.
In accordance with recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), we are encouraging Brookings residents to limit all gatherings of 50 or more people. This includes congregations in places of worship, restaurants and bars, fitness centers and gyms, entertainment venues, and other retail businesses. By limiting public gatherings, we hope to control the transmission of COVID-19 in our community and to protect the health and well-being of our most vulnerable citizens. People over the age of 60 and those with underlying medical conditions are at the highest risk.
Between Tuesday, March 17 and Sunday, March 22, 2020, all meetings of the Brookings City Council and its boards, committees, and commissions, are canceled. This includes the city council study session previously scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
If you believe you have symptoms of COVID-19, please call your healthcare provider before seeking medical treatment in-person. If you can do so from a distance, check-in on your neighbors.
Please continue to use 2-1-1 as a community resource for information related to emergency services and other community programs. Visit www.covid.sd.gov or call 1-800-997-2880 for updated information from the South Dakota Department of Health.
If we can work together to make short-term adjustments, hopefully, we can stem the spread of this virus and its long-term impact.
