Construction has begun on the traffic signal project at the intersection of 5th Street South and Medary Avenue South. The contractor for the project is Bowes Construction Co., Inc.  The project includes removing the existing traffic signals, installing new traffic signals, concrete valley gutters and fillets, curb ramps and pedestrian push buttons. The project is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2017.

The contractor will close 5th Street South on the west side of Medary Avenue during the first phase of the project to construct the fillets, valley gutter and signal work. The contractor will then close 5th Street South on the east side of the intersection for similar work after the west side is open to traffic.  Traffic control and detour signs will be set up throughout the project to alert the public. The existing traffic signals will be kept in place as long as possible until the new traffic signals are installed, which is tentatively scheduled for August. Please note that traffic will not be allowed to drive through the closed areas and should follow the detour signage.

The City would like to remind the public to be cautious when driving or walking through the project area, especially around work areas under construction. We appreciate everyone’s patience during the project and the contractors will open the intersection as soon as possible.
