The City of Brookings concluded its process for filling the vacant Police Chief position by naming Assistant Chief Dave Erickson as the new Chief of Police for the Brookings Police Department. Erickson is a 19-year veteran of the Brookings Police Department and was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2012.  Brookings City Manager Jeff Weldon made the announcement Monday saying Erickson was best qualified for the position from a field of 50 applications.

“Assistant Chief Erickson has experience with virtually every aspect of law enforcement. This, combined with his knowledge of the department and community, make him well qualified to guide the department in the years ahead. He will also be able to provide the necessary leadership to bring about needed improvements to meet the challenges of local law enforcement for the City of Brookings in the future,” Weldon said.

Erickson said he was excited about the opportunities to work officially in this new capacity for public safety for the City of Brookings. He praised the departmental personnel as an outstanding cadre of professional law enforcement staff dedicated to public safety at a time when police work is becoming more difficult. “It will be an honor and privilege to work with them in this new role,” Erickson said.

Erickson has been serving as Acting Police Chief for four months following the retirement of former Police Chief Jeff Miller. He holds bachelor and master degrees from Bellevue University, is a graduate from the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Executives, and a veteran of the United States Army. He begins his official duties effective immediately. He and his wife, Julie, have three children.
