MAYOR CORBETT JOINS MAYORS AGAINST LGBT DISCRIMINATION

Mayor Keith W. Corbett joins the Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination, which is a bipartisan coalition of municipal leaders dedicated to securing inclusive nondiscrimination protections for all, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, at all levels of government. The coalition recognizes the special role mayors play in protecting the rights and safety of residents and in advancing policies that move our communities and our country forward.

Mayor Corbett said, “Brookings is an inclusive community. There is strength in numbers, and I proudly join Mayor Mike Huether with the Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination to erase discrimination and treat everyone fairly and equally.”

Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination is a program of Freedom for All Americans, the bipartisan campaign to win comprehensive LGBT non-discrimination protections nationwide. Throughout all of this work, we must also pursue a broad, ambitious initiative to educate Americans about who LGBTQ people are and why non-discrimination protections are so critical.

Last September, Brookings made history by becoming the first municipality in South Dakota to enact comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people in employment, housing and public accommodations. South Dakota is one of 31 states that currently lack fully inclusive, comprehensive statewide non-discrimination protections.
