PRESS RELEASE: City of Brookings to Hold Special City Council Meeting for COVID-19 Ordinance

The City of Brookings will hold a special City Council meeting tonight Monday, March 23rd at 6:00 p.m. to act on an emergency ordinance and resolution, which will address COVID-19 public health concerns and measures which prioritize the health and safety of our community.

The ordinance addresses the implementation of local measures set to limit operations of social gathering businesses which will enforce social distancing recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), President Donald Trump (White House), and Governor Kristi Noem.

The ordinance includes prohibitions and closures which will affect the following: all restaurants, food courts, coffee houses, bars, breweries, clubs, cafes and other similar places of public accommodation offering food and beverages for on-site consumption, including any alcohol licensees with on-sale privileges, all recreational facilities, public pools, health clubs, athletic facilities and theaters, including movie theaters and music or entertainment venues, all cigar bars, vaping lounges or other similar businesses that allow for on-site consumption, all arcades, bingo halls, bowling alleys, indoor golf ranges, casinos, indoor climbing facilities, skating rinks, and other similar recreational or entertainment facilities.

The meeting will be held in the chambers of the City & County Government Center, located at 520 3rd Street, Room 310. Meeting attendance will be limited due to COVID-19 concerns. Doors to the building will temporarily be opened to the public for the duration of the meeting.

Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing within the chambers with other areas available to accommodate the public. If an individual would like to address the Council, the City request that they sign in before the meeting. City officials are asking that the general public attend the meeting via live broadcast on television cable channel 9 or via the web at The meeting will be rebroadcast on and across the City’s social media channels.
