Announcement

Merkley was pleased to announce; Brookings Health System has, once again, been named as one of the Top 20 Rural Community Hospitals in the nation. Five (5) hospitals in South Dakota were selected as part of the Top 20. The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) named the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health using iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength Index. These rural and community hospitals will be recognized in an awards ceremony during NRHA’s Rural Hospital Innovation Summit May 21 in San Diego.

STRATEGIC DISCUSSION

Brookings Health System Strategic Plan

Senior management presented current status and performance reports for each of the Pillars of Success; Finance, Growth, People, Quality and Service which make up Brookings Health System’s Strategic Plan. The plan was established in 2014 and some of the key objectives were updated in 2017. Board members discussed current objectives and benchmarks and if they are still applicable for the future vision of Brookings Health System.

A roundtable discussion took place on future plan recommendations and additional goals. Consensus from members is the three-year rolling plan and format has worked well and suits our needs. Members would like to see an additional pillar titled Innovation. Other suggestions included involving the community and medical staff for their input and vision. Merkley noted, another Community Perception Survey will be completed this year. Members also discussed the importance of addressing mental/behavioral health as South Dakota is the 2nd leading state in the U.S for suicide.

Leadership will evaluate the current plan for which key objectives have been accomplished and will provide an updated plan based on items discussed.

Upon motion by Darnall, second by Wosje the meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
