Weekly Summary - Week ending October 12, 2020

Brookings County:

  • 997 cases: 151 new cases this week vs 78 last week
  • 6 hospital admissions this week vs 0 the previous week
  • No new deaths
  • Substantial community spread. Note: for moderate spread, there needs to be less than 34 cases in a week
  • Test positivity continues to be high at 30% (WHO recommends < 5%)

What can we do to get this outbreak under control?

  • Socially distance, wear a face covering when in public, wash hands often.
  • We must get percentage of test positives down.  A high percentage says that not enough testing is being done.
  • We need to identify symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.
  • Let’s have a goal of getting to moderate spread – with a low percentage test positivity.

South Dakota:

  • 29,925 cases: 3,906 new cases this week vs. 2,860 last week

  • As of today, there are 278 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19
  • 288 total deaths: 40 deaths this week vs. 30 last week.
  • Test positivity continues to be high at 29% (WHO recommends < 5%)

  • T1.08 million deaths: deaths steady over the past two weeks at 39,000 per week

Travel Restrictions:

If you are planning to travel either within or outside the U.S., you should look at possible travel restrictions since many states and countries are requiring anyone who has been in South Dakota to quarantine for two weeks or present evidence of a negative COVID test.   In some states these are recommendations, while other states enforce these travel bans with relatively high fines.  As of September 28rd, the following states require travelers from South Dakota to quarantine (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/travel/state-travel-restrictions.html [website updated daily]):
