The Human Resources Department is responsible for the organization
and coordination of the Safety program for the City. The safety
program is coordinated through the Safety committee, comprised of
employee representatives, both management and non-management, of
each City department. The mission of the safety committee is to
promote safety awareness and to provide a coordinated effort to
address and help resolve health and safety issues in the City of
Brookings in order to provide the safest possible working conditions
for our employees.
The safety committee investigates injuries and accidents in order
to learn what practices should be changed. The goal of the committee
is not to find fault, but rather to actively work with the departments
to promote safe practices and procedures. The Human Resources Department
manages the Workers Compensation program for the City and the Municipal
Utilities including the submission of injury notices, evaluation
of claim/incident reports, and assists employees to get back to
work as quickly as possible and to resolve the financial issues
surrounding their Work Comp claims.
The safety committee provides employee training events
each year. The goal is to promote awareness of how to perform duties
safely both on the job and at home. The committee also sponsors
the annual Health Fair each fall. The goal of that program is to
encourage healthy life styles and physical health which, in turn,
minimizes the exposures to the City's health and workers compensation
programs. An ancillary goal of the safety-training program is to
promote the team atmosphere of the City by allowing employees an
opportunity to meet and share with one another about their work
with the City.
