The City of Brookings Landfill is committed to a Composting program of grass clippings, leaves and small branches. The material is turned in a large pile during the winter months to help it decompose and then it is screened in the spring to be used as topsoil. This product is free for the public to use on their gardens and yards. Below is a breakdown of the material that makes up the compost.

No chemical additives are included in the process. All composting utilizes natural ingredients in the products that are processed. Processing includes aeration, watering and screening of decomposed grass, leaves, small branches and paper yard waste bags.

Approximate Composition By Weight In Percent:
Grass Clippings - 40%
Leaves - 25%
Paper Bags - 15%
Twigs - 10%
Other(Dirt,Etc.) - 10%
