The Dare "Bug"
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program was first developed
in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1983 and has undergone
many changes since it's inception.
The program consists of seventeen one-hour lessons that teach students
the skills they will need to resist drug abuse, gangs and violence.
The program was brought to Brookings in 1988 and continues to be
taught in each of the three Brookings Elementary Schools.
Approximately 200 fifth grade students benefit from the instruction
each year, learning skills they will use to resist drug abuse, gangs,
and violence.
Currently three officers from the Brookings Police Department are
certified to teach the fifth grade DARE program and two officers
are certified to teach the DARE Junior High program. One officer
is also a DARE mentor spending time in Pierre each year training
new officers to become DARE instructors in their area schools.
