Welcome to the City of Brookings, South Dakota, Street Department!
Since it's your tax dollars that supports this department, we thought
you'd like to know who we are and what we do. There is not enough
space to list everything we do, or all the details, but this will
give you an idea of our duties. If you have any questions, comments,
or suggestions, please let us know. We'd enjoy hearing from you!
The Street Department currently employs 14 personnel to maintain over
100 miles of streets, roads, and alleys. Part of our fleet consists
of front end loaders, snow blowers, motor graders, salt sand spreaders,
skid loaders, street sweepers, trucks, rollers, a line striper, backhoe,
and a variety of pickups and trailers.
Our duties include:
Mosquito Control
Treating ponds, waterways, city parks, ball fields, bike paths, and
other areas of dense vegetation that harbors mosquitoes, with chemical
or biological compounds to kill larvae and adult mosquitoes.
Snow Removal
Sanding, plowing, and blading ice or snow that has accumulated on
the streets
Storm Sewer Maintenance:
Inspecting and maintaining storm sewer system
Street Maintenance And Repairs
Sealing streets, crack sealing, and asphalt road repairs, blading
and grading gravel roads and alleys
Street Paint
Line-striping roadways, directional arrows, yellow curbs, and pedestrian
crossings
Street Signage
Street markers, school traffic signs, and traffic control signs
Street Sweeping
Sweep all hard-surfaced streets, alleys, and municipal parking lots
clean of debris
Weed Control
Spray streets, alleys, drainage ditches, and city property for weeds
Other
Assisting with Spring Clean-up Week, hauling dirt for landscaping projects
in the city parks or bike trails, hauling trees and branches after a
summer storm. Assisting other city departments with various construction
projects.
